Zelle, ACH, Venmo or a card link: which should you offer?
Getting paid quickly depends on how easy you make it for the customer. In the U.S. there are many options, and each fits a different situation. This guide helps you pick the right ones and put them in your payment message.
Zelle
Money moves between U.S. bank accounts, usually within minutes, straight from the customer's banking app. It's popular and simple. Keep in mind that Zelle payments are generally hard to reverse, so use it with customers you know and trust.
ACH bank transfer
A direct transfer between bank accounts, using your routing and account numbers or through a payment provider. Fees are usually low, which makes it a good fit for larger amounts and recurring customers. It can take a few business days to clear.
Venmo and Cash App
Handy for customers who already use them. Both have business options, and fees and limits may apply to business payments, so check each service's current terms before relying on them.
Card payment link
Providers such as Stripe, Square, PayPal and others let you send a link so the customer pays by card in a few taps. It's the most convenient for the customer and gets you paid fast, but each payment carries a processing fee and card payments can be disputed.
Checks
Still common with some business customers, but slower: mailing, depositing and waiting for the funds to clear. Keep it as an option, not the default.
Quick comparison
| Situation | Suggested method |
|---|---|
| Regular customer, normal amount | Zelle or ACH |
| New customer who prefers cards | Card payment link |
| Large invoice | ACH, to keep fees low |
| Customer who always pays by check | Check, with a clear due date |
How to put it in your message
Include the amount, the invoice number, the due date and one main way to pay. Offer the others only if asked. Fewer choices mean fewer questions.
Getting paid is half of it; the other half is knowing who paid and who didn't. Cobrix sends the reminders, shows each customer what they owe and how to pay, and gives you a dashboard of who's late. See the plans.
